    His presence is her gift

By DANIEL SUDDEATH | Posted: Saturday, December 6, 2014

NEW ALBANY — Yusra Hashi prides herself on independence, so much so she didn’t really even want to take part in the interview for the Wish Book program from the News and Tribune and New Hope Services Inc.

But her reason for agreeing to share her story sat in the living room watching Thomas the Tank Engine programs. [...more]

Early to bed, early to rise

By MATT KOESTERS | Posted: Sunday, December 7, 2014 6:22 pm

CLARKSVILLE — The next time you’re having trouble getting motivated in the morning, be sure to think of Antoinette Woods.

For the Clarksville single mother of four sons, the typical day starts when the alarm clock starts shrieking at 4:30 a.m. She may indulge her need for more sleep by pressing the snooze bar once or twice, but she’s up and ready to start her day by 5 a.m. By 5:10, she’s got the boys out of bed for breakfast and teeth brushings. A new need

JEFFERSONVILLE — Marvin Nolan and Chante Trumbo aren’t used to asking for help, especially when it comes to making Christmas morning special for their young children.

“We have never been in this situation, and it’s kind of hard,” said Trumbo, the mother of four children between 4 months to 13 years old. The family is one of this year’s Wish Book selections, a program sponsored by New Hope Services Inc. and the News and Tribune. [...more]

    Family’s all that matters

BY JEROD CLAPP | Posted: Friday, December 12, 2014 6:15 am

JEFFERSONVILLE — They just keep laughing. It doesn’t matter that there’s no family car. Six days a week, Jason Stevens catches his TARC bus and transfers twice, both on his way to and back from work. His wife, Rachale, stays home with their 9-month-old son John and their 20-month-old daughter Elena. Once her teenage boys, Dawson and Brayden Jordan get home from school, they watch their siblings while Rachale runs errands, or cooks, or cleans, or does whatever needs doing that day.[...more]

    Hope amid the craziness

By ELIZABETH BEILMAN | Posted: Thursday, December 11, 2014 8:15 am

JEFFERSONVILLE — When 5-year-old Liam Zimmerman gets overstimulated, he gets wild. A mild to moderate rank on the autism spectrum, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and possibly Tourette’s syndrome all make it difficult for Liam to rein in his behavior.

“It’s who he is,” Aaron Zimmerman, Liam’s father, said. But amidst Liam’s uncontrollable running around and screaming that puts stress on family dynamics [...more]

    Allen family has high hopes

By AMANDA BEAM | Posted: Wednesday, December 10, 2014 5:42 pm

LANESVILLE — Brightened by the lights of the family Christmas tree, Tru Allen danced across her living room floor without a care in the world.

No cares, that was, until her 12-year-old brother Christian turned down the music.

Within seconds, the 6-year-old had finagled the remote away from her drowsy sibling and continued to move barefoot to the beat. [...more]
